WEEK 6 QUESTIONS






1a) What experiences have you had with shopping online?I have shopped online for a range of reasons, on a range of websites. These have included birthday and Christmas presents on red balloon, fishing charter vouchers, and clothing websites. Of course I have also shopped on eBay, mainly for myself for a range of items including, motorbike and car parts, snow gear, womens clothes, womens shoes, and motorbike gear. Another popular online shopping item are tickets to concerts, football games, shows and festivals.
There are certain items I would never walk into a store and buy now, unless I was unable to find it on the net. For example, shoes and tickets. I find womens shoes to be alot cheaper on the web, even when I need to pay for postage. The quality of shoes are terrible these days, they only last for a few months before you need to throw them away.
Buying tickets online is self explanatory, now with ticketek and tickmaster there is no need to waste time driving to pick them up, you buy them online, they emailed to you and print them out, all within a few mintues!







1b) Describe a good experience. With online shopping you want to be able to see a short overview of the product or service you are purchasing. So that those users who regularly purchase it can quickly buy without fuss, this would include minimal clicking and scrolling. A good example is football tickets which supporters may purchase weekly. There also needs to be links and help buttons where users who need extra assistance or are first time purchasers can see more details. With football tickets there needs to be additional information like, location of parking, dress code, food and drink regulations, wheel chair access, seating chart, etc.
Websites that have the ability to summarise information, but also give the ability to clearly access any additional information needed with minimal clicking and scrolling I think provide a good experience.


1c) What did you like about the online store you used?I always enjoy using red balloon and eBay as I am able to filter out results I do not want. This can be payment options, location, dollar value, category, gender, etc.
This goes back to my point of not needing to see information, but still being able to access it if I change my mind or need it.


1d) Describe a bad experience. What I don’t like about some clothing stores is the sizing charts. Especially sites that sell a range of brands and only provide one sizing chart. As any woman or man knows, not all brands fit the same, and realistic sizing charts would encourage more online selling.
A lot of the time, I only buy my favourite brands as I already own a range of tops, dresses, jackets and therefore know how they fit. I am very hesitant in buying other brands in the fear they will not fit properly and therefore I am wasting money.



1e) What problems did you have with the online store?The only problem I have had with online shopping is when buying football tickets once, choosing to retrieve them via email, and they did not arrive. The only way to report the tickets not arriving was to send medallion club an email, in which they would then respond back via email.
Of course, the email response never came through, just like the tickets. There was no other contact information like a phone or fax.
I then had to use a family members email account to email my problem and sort the problem through a different email account.


1f) What features make an online store more appealing?Discounts, cheaper prices, fast delivery and range all make online stores more appealing then walking into a regular store.
Also visual appeal is important. Websites need to ensure they develop a look that suits their target markets.
Regularly updating website is important too. If users like the site they will go back again and again. If the information and products are always the same, they will move on to another site.





1g) What features make an online store less appealing?Over load of information on the front page and a lot of text and scrolling are not appealing to me. If I want information on postage, and the information provided to me is pages long, I will find another site to look at.
Complex sites put people off buying, and in the back of my mind I know there will be a simpler site out there I can use to buy the same or similar product.

Clear easy to read text, navigational bar, search text box, home or main page button, refining search results bar are all helpful for visitors to a site.

There is nothing worse them not being able to find the answer to your question.
If you get lost on a web site or become confused, the back button becomes your best friend! Like a flash light in the dark.


1h) Should we expect to see the prices of goods and services rise or fall due to the migration of consumers online?I think that prices will fall and most importantly website design improved. The online market will become more and more competitive. A range of prices will be available for users to compare and with a few clicks of the mouse, people will choose the cheapest price, on the most user friendly site to buy it on.
I know myself, if I was to buy a motorbike helmet off Website ‘A’ valued at $300 but I had to spend approximately 20 minutes trying to create an account, complete a survey and wait for an email to confirm my email address before I could buy the helmet, I would consider buying it at Website ‘B’ where I can pay $340 and only need to provide my credit card details to complete the purchase.


2a) The dispersion of prices (that is, the spread between the lowest and highest price for a particular product) will narrow. I agree with this. Products that have high price will not sell as well and will be forced to drop their price. Products that have their price set to low will need to lift their price to be able to purchase more and keep up with increasing costs.

2b) The importance of brand names will decrease. As more competitors enter the market place, more brands become available. Like shopping at Aldi versus Safeway, people will try different brands with better price.
However, there will be some products that will not decrease, such as medication or cars. People can be very loyal to particular brands and therefore would rather pay a lot more to ensure they can use that product.
Therefore I do agree that for some products brand names will decrease, but not for all products.



2c) Price competition will make all products cheaper. Prices will fluctuate over time. As demand increases and decreases, so will price. As new competition enters and leaves market places, price will increase and decrease.
Therefore, at time products will become cheaper, but will eventually rise again.


Just like televisions, unless it is flat screen, throw it out! They are not worth anything these days. VCRs are technology of the past and have become dust collectors.
The demand for these are low and therefore the price has plumated, but for their new innovative alternatives prices can range from $300 to $1000's in store and online.


2d) Digital markets will become dominated by a handful of mega-sites, like
Amazon.com.If competitors cannot keep up with sites such as Amazon, they can dominate the market place and not just digitally. As they sell more, they will be able to purchase in bulk, and offer advertising on their site to receive more discounts. Therefore other websites may not be able to keep up and drop out of the market place.
Therefore, there is a possibility that this can occur.



2e) How do you think the balance of power between buyer’s and seller’s will change?There can be a shift for some products, but others may stay the same. Within the mobile phone industry, buyers push the market to produce more technological phones. However, due to the high demand, in particular when you look at Apple products, it then gives the seller power to set high prices.
a high price translates as reliability and quality. It can be the sellers that set these impressions in the market place.
Therefore the balance can never stay the same, but theories around where the push and pull of the market place comes from does stay the same.

2f) Prices are clustered online.For some products, sellers create a set price, like the IPhone. Therefore to set sellers apart, packages and bundles are offered to customers, to set them apart and create competition with each other.
However, this does not apply to all products online.



2g) Online prices are elastic. ( i.e. immune to change up and down with demand)
The demand for products is highly subject to change. With a range of substitute goods available online, the demand for products can rapidly increase and decrease as prices change.
As stock of one particular good decreases due to high demand, the price will begin to increase. This is where the store can then offer reduced price for a substitute good that high inventory stock.



2h) Online prices are generally transparent (the extent to which prices for a given product or service are known by buyers in the marketplace.).The research to find and compare prices online is easier and transparent. Today, you hear a lot of people say “I buy that online for half the price”. It is the norm when purchasing an item that is considered to be expensive to a person. They will first research the range of prices over the internet now. To help ensure they are receiving a fair deal.

3a) What types of m-commerce services does your cell phone provider offer?
Paying bills, internet banking, online selling and buying, purchase movies, music and games, signing up for health services and insurance, and many more. The smart phones have enabled us to use our mobile as a small portable computer.

3b) Which of these services do you use?
There are some that I use more than others. Mainly internet banking, emails and eBay. I also use my phone to Google and browse the web. Although this does have to be monitored as fees are high on your phone, once you exceed your capped internet usage.

3c) What types of transactions do you perform through your cell phone or other wireless device?
I mainly check my banking amounts, but do not pay for items on my mobile. I normally do that via my laptop. I do bid for items on eBay, but finalise payment on my laptop.
I find it a lot easier using a keyboard and full screen.


3d) What types of transactions would you like to perform, but are currently unable to?There are none I am unable to do. I just prefer to perform certain transactions on my laptop, in store or by phone.


3e) What is your opinion of wireless advertising/mobile marketing?
To consumers they can be frustrating part of online shopping. Consumers can become hesitant in filling out email and phone sections of forms online, as they fear they will be spammed.
For a business it is a great idea, and great way to promote a product. The way in which the advertising is actioned needs to be looked at carefully. Pop up rarely get read anymore as consumers will simply close these screens and will refuse to click any links. Subscribing to updates via email or messages are great, but need to ensure they are not daily.

Describe the features of each of these business models:

BROKERAGE MODEL:
Brokers are market-makers: they bring buyers and sellers together and facilitate transactions. Brokers play a frequent role in business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), or consumer-to-consumer (C2C) markets. Usually a broker charges a fee or commission for each transaction it enables. The formula for fees can vary. Brokerage models include:
Marketplace Exchange - offers a full range of services covering the transaction process, from market assessment to negotiation and fulfillment. Exchanges operate independently or are backed by an industry consortium. [Orbitz, ChemConnect]
Buy/Sell Fulfillment - takes customer orders to buy or sell a product or service, including terms like price and delivery. [CarsDirect, Respond.com]
Demand Collection System - the patented "name-your-price" model pioneered by Priceline.com. Prospective buyer makes a final (binding) bid for a specified good or service, and the broker arranges fulfillment. [Priceline.com]
Auction Broker - conducts auctions for sellers (individuals or merchants). Broker charges the seller a listing fee and commission scaled with the value of the transaction. Auctions vary widely in terms of the offering and bidding rules. [eBay]
Transaction Broker - provides a third-party payment mechanism for buyers and sellers to settle a transaction. [PayPal, Escrow.com]
Distributor - is a catalog operation that connects a large number of product manufacturers with volume and retail buyers. Broker facilitates business transactions between franchised distributors and their trading partners.
Search Agent - a software agent or "robot" used to search-out the price and availability for a good or service specified by the buyer, or to locate hard to find information.
Virtual Marketplace - or virtual mall, a hosting service for online merchants that charges setup, monthly listing, and/or transaction fees. May also provide automated transaction and relationship marketing services. [zShops and Merchant Services at Amazon.com]

ADVERTISING MODEL:The web advertising model is an extension of the traditional media broadcast model. The broadcaster, in this case, a web site, provides content (usually, but not necessarily, for free) and services (like email, IM, blogs) mixed with advertising messages in the form of banner ads. The banner ads may be the major or sole source of revenue for the broadcaster. The broadcaster may be a content creator or a distributor of content created elsewhere. The advertising model works best when the volume of viewer traffic is large or highly specialized.
Portal - usually a search engine that may include varied content or services. A high volume of user traffic makes advertising profitable and permits further diversification of site services. A personalized portal allows customization of the interface and content to the user. A niche portal cultivates a well-defined user demographic. [Yahoo!]
Classifieds - list items for sale or wanted for purchase. Listing fees are common, but there also may be a membership fee. [Monster.com, Craigslist]
User Registration - content-based sites that are free to access but require users to register and provide demographic data. Registration allows inter-session tracking of user surfing habits and thereby generates data of potential value in targeted advertising campaigns. [NYTimes]
Query-based Paid Placement - sells favorable link positioning (i.e., sponsored links) or advertising keyed to particular search terms in a user query, such as Overture's trademark "pay-for-performance" model. [Google, Overture]
Contextual Advertising / Behavioral Marketing - freeware developers who bundle adware with their product. For example, a browser extension that automates authentication and form fill-ins, also delivers advertising links or pop-ups as the user surfs the web. Contextual advertisers can sell targeted advertising based on an individual user's surfing activity.
Content-Targeted Advertising - pioneered by Google, it extends the precision of search advertising to the rest of the web. Google identifies the meaning of a web page and then automatically delivers relevant ads when a user visits that page. [Google]
Intromercials - animated full-screen ads placed at the entry of a site before a user reaches the intended content. [CBS MarketWatch]
Ultramercials - interactive online ads that require the user to respond intermittently in order to wade through the message before reaching the intended content. [Salon in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz]

INFOMEDIARY MODEL:Data about consumers and their consumption habits are valuable, especially when that information is carefully analyzed and used to target marketing campaigns. Independently collected data about producers and their products are useful to consumers when considering a purchase. Some firms function as infomediaries (information intermediaries) assisting buyers and/or sellers understand a given market.
Advertising Networks - feed banner ads to a network of member sites, thereby enabling advertisers to deploy large marketing campaigns. Ad networks collect data about web users that can be used to analyze marketing effectiveness. [DoubleClick]
Audience Measurement Services - online audience market research agencies. [Nielsen//Netratings]
Incentive Marketing - customer loyalty program that provides incentives to customers such as redeemable points or coupons for making purchases from associated retailers. Data collected about users is sold for targeted advertising. [Coolsavings]
Metamediary - facilitates transactions between buyer and sellers by providing comprehensive information and ancillary services, without being involved in the actual exchange of goods or services between the parties. [Edmunds]

MERCHANT MODEL:Wholesalers and retailers of goods and services. Sales may be made based on list prices or through auction.
 
Virtual Merchant - or e-tailer, is a retail merchant that operates solely over the web. [Amazon.com]
Catalog Merchant - mail-order business with a web-based catalog. Combines mail, telephone and online ordering. [Lands' End]
Click and Mortar - traditional brick-and-mortar retail establishment with web storefront. [Barnes & Noble]
Bit Vendor - a merchant that deals strictly in digital products and services and, in its purest form, conducts both sales and distribution over the web. [Apple iTunes Music Store]

MANUFACTURER (DIRECT) MODEL:The manufacturer or "direct model", it is predicated on the power of the web to allow a manufacturer (i.e., a company that creates a product or service) to reach buyers directly and thereby compress the distribution channel. The manufacturer model can be based on efficiency, improved customer service, and a better understanding of customer preferences. [Dell Computer]
Purchase - the sale of a product in which the right of ownership is transferred to the buyer.
Lease - in exchange for a rental fee, the buyer receives the right to use the product under a “terms of use” agreement. The product is returned to the seller upon expiration or default of the lease agreement. One type of agreement may include a right of purchase upon expiration of the lease.
License - the sale of a product that involves only the transfer of usage rights to the buyer, in accordance with a “terms of use” agreement. Ownership rights remain with the manufacturer (e.g., with software licensing).
Brand Integrated Content - in contrast to the sponsored-content approach (i.e., the advertising model), brand-integrated content is created by the manufacturer itself for the sole basis of product placement.

AFFILIATE MODEL:
In contrast to the generalized portal, which seeks to drive a high volume of traffic to one site, the affiliate model, provides purchase opportunities wherever people may be surfing. It does this by offering financial incentives (in the form of a percentage of revenue) to affiliated partner sites. The affiliates provide purchase-point click-through to the merchant. It is a pay-for-performance model - if an affiliate does not generate sales, it represents no cost to the merchant. The affiliate model is inherently well-suited to the web, which explains its popularity. Variations include, banner exchange, pay-per-click, and revenue sharing programs. [Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com]
Banner Exchange - trades banner placement among a network of affiliated sites.
Pay-per-click - site that pays affiliates for a user click-through.
Revenue Sharing - offers a percent-of-sale commission based on a user click-through in which the user subsequently purchases a product.

COMMUNITY MODEL:The viability of the community model is based on user loyalty. Users have a high investment in both time and emotion. Revenue can be based on the sale of ancillary products and services or voluntary contributions; or revenue may be tied to contextual advertising and subscriptions for premium services. The Internet is inherently suited to community business models and today this is one of the more fertile areas of development, as seen in rise of social networking.
Open Source - software developed collaboratively by a global community of programmers who share code openly. Instead of licensing code for a fee, open source relies on revenue generated from related services like systems integration, product support, tutorials and user documentation. [Red Hat]
Open Content - openly accessible content developed collaboratively by a global community of contributors who work voluntarily. [Wikipedia]
Public Broadcasting - user-supported model used by not-for-profit radio and television broadcasting extended to the web. A community of users support the site through voluntary donations. [The Classical Station (WCPE.org)]
Social Networking Services - sites that provide individuals with the ability to connect to other individuals along a defined common interest (professional, hobby, romance). Social networking services can provide opportunities for contextual advertising and subscriptions for premium services. [Flickr, Friendster, Orkut]


Users are charged a periodic -- daily, monthly or annual -- fee to subscribe to a service. It is not uncommon for sites to combine free content with "premium" (i.e., subscriber- or member-only) content. Subscription fees are incurred irrespective of actual usage rates. Subscription and advertising models are frequently combined.
SUBSCRIPTION MODEL:
Content Services - provide text, audio, or video content to users who subscribe for a fee to gain access to the service. [Listen.com, Netflix]
Person-to-Person Networking Services - are conduits for the distribution of user-submitted information, such as individuals searching for former schoolmates. [Classmates]
Trust Services - come in the form of membership associations that abide by an explicit code of conduct, and in which members pay a subscription fee. [Truste]
Internet Services Providers - offer network connectivity and related services on a monthly subscription. [America Online]


The utility or "on-demand" model is based on metering usage, or a "pay as you go" approach. Unlike subscriber services, metered services are based on actual usage rates. Traditionally, metering has been used for essential services (e.g., electricity water, long-distance telephone services). Internet service providers (ISPs) in some parts of the world operate as utilities, charging customers for connection minutes, as opposed to the subscriber model common in the U.S.
UTILITY MODEL:
Metered Usage -- measures and bills users based on actual usage of a service.
Metered Subscriptions -- allows subscribers to purchase access to content in metered portions (e.g., numbers of pages viewed). [Slashdot]

What is Twitters business model?
After searching the web for specifics on which business model Twitter fits into and there seems to be a lot of discussion and controversy surrounding this. From my readings I can see there is a little Infomediary, Advertising and Community model involved.
In an excellent article on the impact of twitter on the Arab Spring revolutions, Blake Hounshell makes an important point about twitter itself:
“But five years since its founding, Twitter has hit a critical mass of activists and casual observers on the ground, journalists in the office and in the field, and analysts behind their desks. Twitter today is always buzzing with news, ideas, rumors, speculation, and juicy gossip. (It was Twitter itself that understood this shift from vanity tool to news platform earlier than anyone else, when in November 2009 it changed its prompt from “What are you doing?” to “What’s happening?” One of the fastest ways to tell whether someone’s not worth following is if they’re still answering that first question.)”
You can see that a change in question actually represents a business model innovation on the part of twitter. Once the question being answered changes, so does the value being created. And once the value created changes, you have a new business model.

Australia scored 113.8 mobile phone subscriptions/100 population and ranked 45th for this usage component.

USA scored 90.8 mobile phone subscribers/100 population and ranked 76th for this usage component.

China scored 55.5 mobile phone subscribers/100 population and ranked 111th for this usage component.

Australia scored 74.3 internet users/100 population and ranked 20th for this usage component.

USA scored 78.0 internet users/100 population and ranked 15th for this usage component.

China scored 28.9 internet users/100 population and ranked 75th for this usage component.

India scored 5.1 internet users/100 population and ranked 118th for this usage component.


3) Compare main strengths and weaknesses of Australia or your home country in the survey
Australia's main strengths come from the environment components, including market environment, political and regulatory environment, and infrastructure environment (13th overall). Australia's main weaknesses come from the readiness components, including individual readiness, business readiness, and government readiness (26th overall). Australia's usage components are divided with the strength of government usage, which is ranked 6th, compared to individual usage which is 18th and business usage is 27th (16 overall).


4) What does the survey suggest to you about the Information Technology readiness of Australian business compared to Australian consumers?
Australian business readiness was 25th overall in comparison to Australian's individual readiness which was 39th. It shows that the business industry within Australia has high acceptance and willingness to use information technology in comparison to other countries, as well as Australian individuals.
We can see individual usage is ranked higher at 18, than business which is ranked at 27. These results show is that Australian business' are more advanced but usage is greater by Australian individuals.
